The short answer

Commercial access control in Southern California typically costs $1,500 to $4,500 per door installed, covering the reader, controller, lock hardware, cabling and labor. Cloud platforms add about $150 to $300 per door per year in licensing. A 5-door office runs about $7,500 to $22,500; a 20-door building about $30,000 to $90,000.

By size

Cost by system size

SystemInstalledYearly licensingTypical fit
5 doors$7,500–$22,500$750–$1,500Small office, clinic, retail
20 doors$30,000–$90,000$3,000–$6,000Corporate office, school, mid-size building
50 doors$75,000–$225,000$7,500–$15,000Campus, hospital, multi-tenant building

Per-door cost tends to drop as door count rises, because controllers, setup and mobilization are spread across more doors.

What drives cost

What determines your price

Door hardware

The biggest swing. Reusing a working electric strike or mag lock is far cheaper than converting a mechanical door to electrified hardware.

Lock type

Electric strikes run about $150 to $400, mag locks $300 to $600 and electrified mortise locks $800 to $1,800 in hardware cost.

Readers

Standard mobile and card readers run about $250 to $500; multi-credential $400 to $800; biometric $800 to $2,500.

Cabling

New runs to each door typically add $250 to $600 per door, more with conduit or fire-rated penetrations.

Architecture

Cloud removes the server but adds yearly licensing; on-premises adds servers and IT upkeep.

Integrations

Cameras, alarms, visitor management, elevators and HR or directory sync typically add 10 to 25%.

5-year cost

Cloud vs on-premises over five years

20 doors, 5 yearsCloud-managedOn-premises
Readers, controllers and locks$21,000–$52,000$23,000–$58,000
Cabling and installation$15,000–$34,000$17,000–$38,000
Server and softwareNone$8,000–$18,000
Licensing (5 years)$15,000–$30,000Support plans vary
Estimated total$51,000–$116,000$48,000–$114,000

Totals land close together, so the choice usually comes down to IT staffing, multi-site needs and data control rather than price.

Cloud or on-prem

When each model makes sense

Cloud usually wins

Small or no security team, multiple sites, cloud directory systems, and a preference for subscription over capital spending.

On-premises usually wins

Data must stay on site, an existing on-prem system is worth keeping, or a strong IT team prefers to run servers.

Subscription option

Software, hosting and support as one monthly per door. See access control as a service.

Read the fine print

What low quotes often leave out

  • Lock conversions: some quotes assume existing locks can be reused when they can't.
  • Fire alarm tie-in: mag locks must release on fire alarm under California code, which needs coordination with the fire alarm system.
  • Directory sync: connecting Entra ID, Google or HR systems takes setup time.
  • Licensing term: check whether the quote covers one year or five.
  • Credentials: physical cards typically run $5 to $15 each.
  • Old system removal: decommissioning legacy readers and panels usually adds 5 to 10%.
  • Permits and training: make sure both are in scope.

Saving money

Ways to lower the cost

  • Reuse good hardware: working electrified locks and recent OSDP readers can often stay.
  • Prioritize doors: start with perimeter, server and high-value rooms, then add interior doors later.
  • Use mobile credentials: phones replace most cards and cut reissue costs.
  • Bundle with cameras or cabling: one mobilization and one cabling scope cost less than two.
  • Lock in longer license terms: multi-year terms usually cost less per year.

50 doors6 to 12 weeks, usually phased

FAQ

Access control cost questions

How much does commercial access control cost per door?

In Southern California, typically $1,500 to $4,500 per door installed, plus about $150 to $300 per door per year for cloud licensing.

How much does a 20-door system cost?

About $30,000 to $90,000 installed, plus $3,000 to $6,000 a year in cloud licensing, depending on door hardware and integrations.

Is cloud or on-premises access control cheaper?

Over five years they usually land within about 5 to 10% of each other. Cloud avoids servers and IT upkeep; on-premises avoids subscriptions.

Can I keep my existing locks?

Often. Working electric strikes, mag locks and electrified mortise locks can usually stay. Mechanical locks need electrified hardware, and old readers usually need replacing.

Does multi-site access control cost more?

Per-door cost stays about the same with cloud platforms. Multiple sites mainly add travel and mobilization, typically 5 to 10%.

How long does installation take?

About 1 to 2 weeks for 5 doors, 3 to 6 weeks for 20 doors and 6 to 12 weeks for 50 doors.
